Most fishing lures you get are ready to go right out of the package, but of course some could be even better. My wife always tells me that I tend to go over board with seasoning when I am grilling meat. So I guess maybe I do it with everything. I am always trying to figure out a way to improve something, maybe even if it doesn’t need it. Nah, thats crazy! I have a few lures that I just have to modify when it comes to bass fishing and here they are.
1.Of course the Bagley Bang-O-Lure is one of my go to baits as I discussed in my previous post about Confidence Baits. This bait is hard to beat right from the factory, but I just couldn’t help my self. So I added larger RED treble hooks. I really do think it makes a difference. The added red color of the larger hook gives the appearance of a bleeding fish….maybe.
2. #4 Mepps What could this lure possibly need? Well when I first started fishing this lure nothing. Then on a rather slow fishing trip I decided to add a little something to it and I caught fish. So that was it from then on I always add a yellow curly tail grub to the back of it. I always keep a bag of them in my tackle box. Fish can’t stand to see that little yellow tail swim by them. Even pan fish will hit it, but I rarely get them hooked because of the size of the treble hook.
3. Mepps Minnow Comet this modification is great for the fall when the water is covered in leaves. With this lure you have the ability to unscrew the minnow and replace it with a worm hook. Then you can use it with a lizard I drag it across the leaves and bass/Jack fish destroy it. The spinner with the lizard action following it is just deadly.
